Doomed Presidency?

Gloria Support Weakening

By Richard C. Paddock, Times Staff Writer

MANILA — Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, unable to reverse the country's economic slide and beset by corruption allegations against her family, is facing mounting opposition among groups that once backed her.

Less than a year after Arroyo won her first full term as president, some leaders of the Roman Catholic Church have become openly critical of her, and some active and retired military officers have quietly begun talking of her ouster.  More...

Love Cynics

LOS ANGELES They smooch and hug as cameras snap. Friends enthusiastically report: "It's true! They're smitten!" Their publicists confirm it is the real deal. "Publicity stunt," said 62 percent of respondents to a People magazine's poll.

Bo's Fans Complain

Some Bo Bice fans are angry that Carrie Underwood seems to have gotten the better deal in her original song "Angels Brought Me Here."  In fact, Carrie's song wasn't an original at all, but "Angels Brought Me Here" was previously released by Australian Idol Guy Sebastian.  Carrie Underwood was essentially given a song that was a hit song in Australia for her original song, while Bo Bice was given a true original song that was completely untested.

Country Girl Rules

NEW YORK  — America's "Idol" is ... Carrie Underwood!

It came down to the country girl vs. the rock star — and the country girl won.

Wednesday night, in a special two-hour finale live from the Kodak Theater in Hollywood, "American Idol" host Ryan Seacrest announced who had won America's hearts: Underwood, the fresh-faced 22-year-old crooner from Checotah, Okla., who beat runner-up Bo Bice, the long-haired 29-year-old rocker from Helena, Ala.

Upon hearing she'd won the competition, Underwood burst into tears, but got herself together to sing what's become one of her signature songs: "Inside Your Heaven."

"Thank you America!" Carrie shouted at the end of the song.

Wednesday night also had other treats in store. Bo sang with Southern rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Carrie with country trio Rascal Flatts. Many former "Idols" also made appearances.

It could infect 20 percent of the world's population, kill many millions and create an economic crisis but scientists say not enough is being done to combat a bird flu virus that could trigger a global pandemic. Detained President Joseph Estrada's lawyers scored a major victory when they proved beyond reasonable doubt that the testimony of former Ilocos Sur Gov. Luis "Chavit" Singson and his two witnesses who corroborated his claims of having delivered to Estrada in his Polk Street home the amount in cash of P130 million in tobacco excise tax money, in 1998 was a complete fabrication and that they perjured themselves.

This was proved by the defense lawyers led by former Sen. Rene Saguisag, following a hearing and an actual demonstration at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) along Roxas Boulevard, Manila.
